SENATOR DAVID CARLUCCI, FIGHTING FOR DSPs

Providers who serve New Yorkers with intellectual and developmental disabilities are facing massive budget cuts, and they are sounding the alarm as they struggle to attract and retain Direct Service Professionals (DSPs).

Direct Service Professionals provide critical therapeutic and emotional support to residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities; the safety and well-being of these residents depend upon a strong DSP workforce. However, even prior to this pandemic, DSPs were being underpaid and overworked. Now, proposed budget cuts, combined with the added difficulties brought on by COVID-19, have made the situation dire.

This is why I am fighting to ensure that DSPs are compensated properly as they continue to serve on the frontlines of this pandemic. To ensure that our state's most vulnerable are cared for, we must demand fair pay for their caretakers.
